This message indicates that Joomla cannot connect with Moodle on the configured URL.
Have you done all the pre-requisites steps on Moodle side first?

Yes, all done and checked and double checked.
I was wondering what would happen if I removed the older version of Joomla and uploaded the 1.7 version directly into the cpanel - do you think this might help. I have read many of the posts regarding this - and as the system is now not enabling me to install anything I wonder if this would sort my problem.

Changing versions will not solve the empty response problem, as the 2 work the same. Anyway, I would start over if your system is not working well.
As for the empty response message: check that you don't have any security restrictions preventing the server from connecting to itlsef.
