Well, the first thing I would do is make sure I can really open the URLs from the server, using wget/curl in the command line, and go from there.

In case anyone else has the same issue, the solution here was:
- remove the slash at the end of the URL's, so that it's like yoursite.com/joomla (and not /joomla/ or /moodle/). Do this in the settings of Joomdle both in Joomla and Moodle.
- in case of multilingual site, fill out the language in the Joomdle settings (in Moodle) for the default language as follows (if English is the default language, for example): en (and not en-GB)
