I would like to remove the Moodle login page as the final step of my installation and configuration. The instructions warn, though:

Define an alternate login URL for Moodle, so that Moodle users never see the Moodle login page. We recommend that you don't enable this until everything is up, testing, testing again, tested one more time, and running. Oh did we say, test first before you do this!

But that doesn't provide me with anything specific I can do to ensure I don't lose access to Moodle altogether. What specific steps should I take BEFORE removing the Moodle login page?

mmm did you read that from our Wiki? I ask because it tells you how to do it and immediately below tells you how to get in should you have a problem (ie create an alternate login page)

Yep. I read this on your Wiki installation guide. And, yes, I have bookmarked the log in to Moodle for administrators. So, is it the case that if I remove the Moodle login, so long as I have that back link to Moodle I should be okay?

Yes, it should be OK. Technically, of course you can get there by changing stuff through cpanel but that would be painful and reactive rather than what is suggested.
