I don't know the reason.... I tried to replicate the problem myself, with PHP 5.5.9 and could not trigger the problem.
I will try again later in another setup, just in case.

Do you mean 5.30?
By any change do you have magic quotes on in your php confg?

Magic quotes are off.

Thanks for your offer but there seems to be no direct need for that. The site now works by resetting the outdated JRequest. I'll keep an eye on that with future updates.
I'm planning to set up a test site with php7. Maybe I'll get back to you on this matter thereafter if that's OK with you?

Just remember that this will be removed from Joomla soon (although I don't really know when). Hopefully you''ll move to PHP 7 before that happens.
