I don’t think we have anything particularly security-related installed. I’ve tried disabling every plugin I can think of — Headtag, OSpam-a-not, LLFJ (lazy image loader), JCH Optimize (CSS/Java combiner) — and changing to the default front-end template, but it makes no difference.
Could this have something to do with the web hosting setup?
Incidentally, since I don’t have any local PHP setup I’ve been doing my testing from another web hosting account which is with the same company, but on a different server.

Are Moodle and Joomla on different hosting providers?
If it is the same, it would not make much sense that it is related to hosting, as it works in Moodle side.
Try disabling all non-core system plugins in Joomla, to see if that helps.
