[Closed] Wrap Joomla inside Moodle

Hello fellow Joomdlers,

Joomdle is installed in a number of sites where Moodle is wrapped inside Joomla, but I’m looking to do it the other way around. In other words, I’d like to keep the Moodle header and show Joomla (without the header) beneath it. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to go about this? The attached pic illustrates how the transition between sites would happen. Any suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

Joomdle has not been designed to work this way nor have I seen any work in Moodle that would allow this or even a fraction of this to happen effectively either.

Before you think too much on this, I would be asking what is it from Joomla that you wish to appear in Moodle? Perhaps the answer to this will show you other solutions instead? Also, do you expect integration or just a link?

Not sure what you mean. As far as I can tell, Joomdle already has the functionality to support this setup (i.e. SSO and user sync) . All I’m looking to do is to strip the header off Joomla and replace it with the one from Moodle. Regarding the Moodle header, apart from the login/logout function (and the “you are logged in as…” line), everything is static; It just contains a menu with hard links to various pages… one of these links would open Joomla, like this:

Header Menu:
Link 1: Home – www.my-moodle-site.com
Link 2: Courses - www.my-moodle-site.com/course/
Link 3: Events: www.my-moodle-site.com/calendar/view.php
Link 4: JomSocial: www.my-joomla-site.com

Am I missing something? What part of this won’t work?

Hi again, looking at the Joomdle functionality it includes much much more than SSO and user Sync. You are correct that those should be OK but all the other stuff is written "in Joomla". Some of which may or may not work in a "wrapper" inside Moodle.

In terms of your "hard links", you indicate you wish to strip off the Joomla header and have the content show up with a Moodle header.
- Creating the menu items in Moodle with external links / hard links is OK
- Stripping off the Joomla header is OK - call index2.php instead of index.php -- you can find more about this over at joomla.org
- Having the Joomla content appear "Wrapped" inside Moodle (ie Joomla content below Moodle header with auto scroll, self correcting widths, etc.), I have never seen this done before. Nor do I know if Moodle has this functionality.
- I notice you now indicate a particular extension, Jomsocial. You will most likely need to develop a customer Jomsocial template to support this. Jomsocial has many links to other Jomsocial functions, each of which place calls using the normal Joomla index.php. As a result you will get Jomsocial with a Joomla header inside the wrapper. You can test this by creating a wrapper link in Joomla to Jomsocial. You may need to adjust the Jomsocial calling router to fix this which I believe is in the controller code. You will likely need to strip out the Jomsocial menu and build your own set as well but I guess this depends on whether you can control the display of Jomsocial through the controller (Note this is a hack). You may wish to search the Jomsocial forum to see if this can be done properly.


Again, I would seriously review the features you require from Joomla. Joomla is an entire platform that in many ways, IMO, is "bigger" than Moodle. Thus Joomla being the "container". If you really wish Moodle to be the "container", I would look for the Joomla (and Joomla extension) functions you require in Moodle using Moodle blocks, etc.

I think the best course of action (as far as my particular situation is concerned) is to avoid wrapping Joomla or Moodle altogether. Instead, I'll COPY the Moodle header into the Joomla template. This should do the trick. I'll post links when I get it up and running. Thanks for the feedback.
