[Closed] How to offer a free course? was created by Rob Spurlock
Hi All,
We are wondering if it's possible to offer a free course and how to do it? All of our courses have a per cost fee but we want to allow users to sign up and get a free course without any obligation to buy other courses.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob

Ok, back to this issue.
We want users to sign up and get a free course. Problem is if we assign a zero price to the free course, we get an xmlrpc error and it fails to get added to the cart products.
I think we're going to have to set the free course up as a self enrol product then just redirect new signups to the correct URL in moodle so they can click the self enrol button.
Anyone have a better idea?

Hi.
This should be working fine. If not, it is a Joomdle bug.
I will test when I have the time and let you know.

Which moodle version are you using?
What are the steps to get the error?
Thanks,
Antonio

Also, do you use Tienda or VM?

Hi Antonio,
We're using Moodle 2.0.2+ and we get the same error in both Virtuemart and Tienda.
To reproduce, we created a course, then set the Joomdle enrolment value to $0. When we try to enable the product in Joomdle, we get the xmlrpc error.
If we can't do a zero dollar product properly then we're also looking at the self-enrol option and redirecting users there after they sign up in Joomdle/Joomla.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

I tried to reproduce your problem, but it is working for me locally.
Although I tried your steps, that is not how I usually do it: as moodle permits having different enrol methods for a course, I just don't enable joomdle for the free courses, and so when you enable the course in Joomdle shop, it will have $0 value.

Hi Antonio,
I've done as you said and now it shows up in Tienda with $0 and I can add it to my cart. Problem now is how do I check-out with a $0 item and get my free course added to my account in Moodle/Tienda/Joomdle?
When I click to confirm my order I just get a blank Order Summary page but no text/options to continue etc.
Any ideas? I think this is my final piece to my puzzle and we launch Wednesday.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Hi.
Don't know what is happening, but we have this same scenario set up on the joomdle demo, and it works just fine.
I would try creating a 0$ normal product (not course) and test with it first.

Hi Antonio,
I get the same thing with a free manually added product. It just goes to an Order Summary page but with no info on the order. Any ideas?
