That all depends on your environment and what extensions you have implemented for student profiles eg. CB, Jomsocial, Joomla, etc. Joomdle itself does not maintain user profiles and provides you with the ability to integrate, syncronise and centralise the profiles. Which tool you use is a matter of your personal preference and website design.
