Thanks for the help! I gave Community Builder a try. Perhaps it's too complex for the simple feature that I need, but it does the work.
For googlers, these are the steps I remember doing:
- Install Joomla extensions com_comprofiler.zip and mod_cblogin.zip.
- Set Component->Community Builder->Configuration->General->Name_Style to "First Name and Last Name Field".
- Go to Component->Joomdle->Mappings->New and set additional data source as Community Builder, and the select both firstname.
- Save an repeat the last step selecting both lastname fields.
