Questions about xml rpc and no optimal integration was created by Mario van der Mee
Dear sir/ madam,

I'm a grade 6 teacher and I use joomla to manage our website ( www.meestermario.nl ). I'm really excited to start using Moodle too and to integrate these two I want to use Joomdle. There is only one problem.
In the setup I had to fill in the XML-RPC host. Because my site is a hosted website, I filled in the public ip-address. I hope I did it correctly.
In the next step I had to enable XML-RPC and this is where I think the problem is. How do I do that? Do I have to enable it in the Joomla backend? If so, what plugin do I have to enable? There are quite a few to choose from:
- xml rpc joomdle
- xml rpc joomla
- xml rpc movable type API
- xml rpc blogger API
I experimented, and I enabled xml rpc joomdle and xml rpc joomla, but when I try to login with a testaccount I get a blanc page. After that my testuser is not registred in Moodle.
I contacted my host to ask if they hosted xml-rpc, but the answer was no. Is that required to enable the xml-rpc plugin in joomla? If so, what other steps can I undertake?

Thank you in advance and with kind regards,

ausroels

XML-RPC is in a few locations.

The first is that XML-RPC for PHP must be set up. You may need your hosting company to help here. But you can check for this in your Joomla Admin/Help/System Info/PHP Information and look for a label called XMLRPC.

The second is in moodle where you define the host that will use XML-RPC to gain access to moodle. It sounds like you have done this correctly.

Both of the above can be found here in the prerequisites document:
joomdle.com/index.php?option=com_content...59&Itemid=99&lang=en

The other place XML-RPC is used is inside Joomla. If you installed R0.23 this will be automatically enable. In fact there are a few plugins of which all are automatically enabled.
The plugin names can be found at the bottom of this document
joomdle.com/index.php?option=com_content...8&Itemid=101&lang=en

I notice that when I click on your moodle link, it shows course information from moodle. Did you manage to fix your problem?

Out of interest, I am also helping to coaching Grade 6 (Primary 6) students and just happen to use the same yootheme template that you use. www.onsponge.com

What a coincidence that we use the same webtemplate! I think it's a great template with a wide variety of ways to visually enhance your site!
I looked in the PHP information section of the Joomla backend, but there is no real label with xml-rpc. I did found this:
- In PHP Core:
xmlrpc_error_number 0 0
xmlrpc_errors Off Off
- DOM:
DOM/XML enabled
DOM/XML API Version 20031129
libxml Version 2.6.30
- LIB XML
libXML support active
libXML Version 2.6.30
libXML streams enabled
- SIMPLEXML
simplexml support enabled
Revision $Revision: 1.151.2.22.2.35 $
Schema support enabled
-XML
XML Support active
XML Namespace Support active
libxml2 Version 2.6.30
- XML READER
XMLReader enabled
- XML WRITER
XMLWriter enabled
In the PHP settings section I found this:
XML turned on: Yes
I contacted my webhost, but the answer was that they didn't install xml-rpc on the server. Does this mean it's over for me and Joomdle?

Thanks a lot for the support and with kind regards,

Ausroels

You will require XML-RPC for Joomdle. And most other extensions / applications that require Remote Procedure Calls. I am surprised that they do not support this as most shared hosts that I have used all support XML-RPC. Your hosting provider (hosting2go) is closed today so I couldn't ask them myself. Did you ask them if it is installed or if they could install it? I would just tell them you need XML-RPC for PHP it is just a simple task for them to set up.

Hello Chris,

I contacted my webhost (hosting2go) and asked them to consider what you wrote to me. Their answer again was "that it was not possible to install individual extensions on the server that demand a recompile of the php." The only sollution they could give me was the next hyperlink:

nl2.php.net/manual/en/ref.xmlrpc.php

In about 3/4 of the text there is the following message:

"giunta dot gaetano at sea-aeroportimilano dot it
13-Sep-2006 03:40
If you need to use this extension but are stuck on a server where it can not be installed, the php-xmlrpc library found at phpxmlrpc.sourceforge.net includes an emulation layer that aims to be 100% compatible with the API of the native extension (as part of the "extras" package since version 0.2).
This means your code should be able to run unmodified on top of the php-xmlrpc library. Of course performance will be at least an order of magnitude worse..."

With kind regards,

Mario van der Mee

Hi. I'm sorry but I don't even know what the post is suggesting.

I really don't think it is possible to get Joomdle running without XML-RPC :(
